Marketing & Communications Consultancy
This is my bread and butter and something that gives me great joy every day. I am particularly motivated to work with 'stay up' businesses and organisations (i.e. where there is already evidence of market demand and where the business fundamentals are sound). I also love working for a cause - i.e. providing marketing expertise and ideas for not-for-profits who are looking to grow their footprint or extend their impact. No two jobs are ever the same, but the "Hook by Crook' marketing plan and fundamentals always hold true. Governance
Over the past decade, I have had the pleasure of serving on a number of not-for profit and advisory boards, with each one giving me the opportunity to sit alongside some amazing people, and to contribute fully and learn from others too.
For three of these roles, I have been appointed into Chair positions; a role that I enjoy immensely for its ability to lead by example, shape strategic direction, bring a team together and achieve collaborative outcomes.
In 2020, I became a Member of the Institute of Directors, taking a number of these courses to complement skills and experience gained at the coalface.
Annual Reports, Funding Pitches & Information Memorandums
What I've come to realise with funding projects and Information Memorandums is that you have to be really good at telling your story and backing it up with facts and figures that support it (the narrative and the numbers). And not only do you need to be good at story-telling, but you also need to be succinct and aligned with what the audience is looking for. My skill is in distilling your story into soundbites that capture people's imagination. As I have said to many organisations, you have to remember that most grantmakers are busy people and there are lots of organisations vying for their attention (and their funds). As a result, make sure that your story is easy to read, easy to understand and easy to say yes to.
Elections & Campaign Management
This is a niche that I have come to really enjoy - a) because I get to meet some really interesting and ambitious people who want to create impact, and b) because I love to strategise on messaging and ad placement. Winners are grinners and we've had a winning run with many candidates we've assisted. Design, Print, Websites, Social - any or all
Marketing material and digital content will ride or fall on its ability to capture the imagination of your target market. That's why you need a fantastic creative team around you - people who have the skills and expertise to capture what's in your imagination, and to turn it into graphics, print material, digital and social imagery and websites that work. Public Speaking
I remember back to a time when public speaking was the last thing I'd want to do.. but over time, I've come to really enjoy it. Especially if I'm talking about my passion for marketing, marketing consultancy, corporate social responsibility, or (more latterly), the fact that I ended up running a marathon on each of the seven continents (yes, even Antarctica, which was run in February 2020 just before the world tipped on its Covid axis!).
